Why Coconut Wax Is the Cleanest Burning Candle Wax — And What That Means for Your Home

Most people don't think about what's in their candles. They smell good, they look nice, they create atmosphere. But if you've ever burned a candle in a closed room and noticed a faint headache or eye irritation afterward, the wax is worth paying attention to.

Here's what's actually burning in most candles — and why it matters.


What Most Candles Are Made Of

The global candle market is dominated by paraffin wax — a byproduct of petroleum refining, the same process that produces gasoline and diesel fuel. Paraffin is cheap, holds fragrance well, and has a long shelf life, which is why it became the industry standard in the 20th century.

When paraffin burns, it releases several compounds. Research presented at the 238th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society by Dr. Amid Hamidi of South Carolina State University found that paraffin candles release potentially dangerous levels of benzene and toluene — the same chemicals found in vehicle exhaust — when burned indoors.¹

Additional combustion byproducts from paraffin include:

  • Acetaldehyde and formaldehyde — volatile organic compounds (VOCs) also classified as indoor air pollutants by the EPA²
  • Soot and particulate matter — the black residue found on walls, ceilings, and the inside of glass jars after repeated burns

The EPA lists candles as a contributing source of indoor VOC pollution and particulate matter in its Indoor Air Quality guidance.²

For people with asthma, allergies, chemical sensitivities, or young children in the home, repeated paraffin candle use in poorly ventilated spaces is worth reconsidering.


What About Soy Wax?

Soy wax became the popular "natural" alternative to paraffin in the early 2000s, and it is genuinely cleaner — it's plant-derived, burns cooler, and produces less soot than paraffin.

However, soy wax has its own considerations:

  • Labeling loopholes — candles containing as little as 51% soy wax can legally be marketed as "soy candles" in the US. Many "soy" candles are blended with paraffin and carry no obligation to disclose the ratio.³
  • Agricultural footprint — the majority of commercial soy is grown using significant herbicide loads, including glyphosate, and the US soy supply chain has complex land-use implications.
  • Fragrance performance — soy wax has a lower maximum fragrance load than coconut wax, meaning more fragrance oil is typically required to achieve the same scent intensity.

Soy is meaningfully better than paraffin. It is not the cleanest option available.


Why Coconut Wax Is Different

Coconut wax is derived from the oil of coconuts — a rapidly renewable crop grown in tropical regions. It is widely considered the cleanest-burning wax commercially available for the following reasons:

Burns cooler and slower:
Coconut wax has a lower melt point than paraffin or soy. Lower combustion temperature means fewer incomplete combustion byproducts — less soot, fewer VOCs released per burn.

Superior scent throw:
Coconut wax holds fragrance oils at a higher concentration than soy and releases them more evenly across the burn, producing fuller room fragrance at lower temperatures without requiring excess fragrance oil load.

Virtually soot-free:
A properly wicked coconut wax candle produces almost no visible black soot. This is both an air quality benefit and a practical one — your walls and jar stay clean.

Renewable and biodegradable:
Coconut oil is derived from a crop that regenerates annually. The finished wax is fully biodegradable, unlike petroleum-derived paraffin.


ESG Prime-Rated Fragrance Oils: What That Means

Fragrance is one of the least regulated ingredient categories in US consumer products. Under current FDA rules, "fragrance" on a label can legally represent a mixture of dozens of undisclosed chemicals — including phthalates, which are plasticizing compounds associated with endocrine disruption in research published by the National Institutes of Health.⁴

ESG Prime-rated fragrance oils are evaluated against environmental, social, and governance criteria for ingredient safety, including:

  • Absence of restricted or flagged chemical compounds
  • Phthalate-free formulation
  • Transparency in ingredient disclosure
  • Environmental impact of sourcing

This is a meaningful distinction — it means the fragrance has been evaluated against a defined safety framework, not simply formulated to smell good.


Phthalate-Free and Paraben-Free: Why It Matters

Phthalates are added to synthetic fragrance oils to extend scent longevity. Research published in Environmental Health Perspectives and reviewed by the National Toxicology Program has associated phthalate exposure with hormonal disruption, particularly in children and during pregnancy.⁵

Parabens are preservative compounds used in cosmetics and fragrance products, also associated with endocrine disruption concerns in the research literature.⁶

A candle formulated without both removes the two most commonly flagged synthetic chemical categories from the product entirely.


Pet Safety and Candles

This question deserves a direct, honest answer rather than a blanket reassurance.

The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center and veterinary toxicology sources note that certain essential oils are toxic to cats and dogs — particularly tea tree oil, pennyroyal, and concentrated citrus oils at sufficient doses.⁷ The relevant question for candles is dose: the concentration of essential oil released during normal candle burning in a ventilated room is significantly lower than the concentrations documented to cause harm.

What we know:

  • Cats are more sensitive than dogs to many essential oils due to differences in hepatic (liver) metabolism
  • Birds are extremely sensitive to airborne compounds — no candle should be burned near birds
  • Smoke and soot from any candle are respiratory irritants for pets

Our position: Our candles are formulated to be used safely in homes with pets at normal use concentrations in ventilated spaces. This is not the same as saying essential oils are universally safe for pets at all concentrations — they are not.

If your pet shows respiratory distress, excessive salivation, eye watering, or behavioral changes near a burning candle, extinguish it, ventilate the room, and contact your veterinarian.


The Reusable Amber Glass Jar

When the wax is gone:

  • Fill the jar with boiling water to loosen remaining wax, pour out, and wipe clean
  • Reuse as a bathroom cup, desk organizer, succulent planter, or airtight storage jar
  • The lid makes it useful for anything requiring a seal

Zero waste from first burn to last.


How to Get the Most From Your Candle

Trim the wick to ¼ inch before every burn.
A long wick produces a larger, hotter flame that accelerates wax consumption, produces more soot, and burns the candle unevenly. A properly trimmed wick gives you a clean, controlled, slow burn.

The first burn sets the memory of the wax.
On the first use, burn the candle until the entire top surface of wax melts to the edge of the jar — typically 1–2 hours depending on jar diameter. If you extinguish before the wax pool reaches the edges, the candle will tunnel down the center on every subsequent burn, permanently reducing its usable life.

Maximum 4 hours per session.
Extended burns overheat the jar, can cause the wick to mushroom, and degrade fragrance quality. Extinguish after 4 hours, allow to cool completely, retrim the wick, and relight.

Keep away from drafts.
Air movement — from fans, open windows, or HVAC vents — causes uneven burning, increases flame size, and produces more soot. Place your candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface away from airflow.
